Description

Contains 248 woodcut emblems within ornamental borders, gathered from earlier emblem books published by Plantin, including those of Alciato, Sambucus, Junius, and Paradin.

In verse.

The second part has divisional title page; pagination and register are continuous.

The last leaf is blank.

Page 2*3r is in two states; line 18 ends (1) "and" or (2) "behalfe"; the latter is partly reimposed and reset. Quires O and P are in two impositions, each imposition with a woodcut not in the other; (1) p. 109 has "Fato non Fortuna", or (2) p. 119 has "Ex damno alterius."

In the Schulich-Woolf copy line 18 on page 2*3r ends "and"; page 119 has "Ex damno alterius"

19th century red crushed morocco by W. Pratt, gilt-panelled covers with French fillet borders, fleuron cornerpieces, raised bands, spine lavishly gilt in compartments with fleuron centerpiece surrounded by small tools, curling cornerpieces, gilt titling, turn-ins with floral gilt roll, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt.

Title page with printer's devce and woodcut border, full-page woodcut coat of arms of Robert Dudley, Earl Leicester on verso .... Front pastedown with bookplate of Harold Greenhill; front free endpaper with bookplate of Robert S. Pirie; front flyleaf with pencilled inscription of W. A. White, dated 20 July 1890; rear flyleaf with initials of Allerton C. Hickmott. Neat contemporary (somewhat faded) ink notation of the source for the emblem (e.g., "Ex Alciato") written beneath the heading for each.--bookseller's description.
