Description

This work is the second supplement to Lysons' "The environs of London" ... A first supplement was published in 1800 ... The imprint of Strahan and Preston appears on the verso of the title-leaf and on page 493.

: 'The present volume contains all the corrections which have occurred, and the supplementary matter which has been collected, in preparing, after a lapse of fifteen years, a new edition of the History of the Environs of London for the press ...' (p.[iii]). Of the nine plates issued with this second supplement (a first supplement was published in 1800 as "An historical account of those parishes in ... Middlesex which are not described in The environs of London"; see No.1978), four were intended to replace plates in the first edition of "The environs of London", and one (numbered V on page [xi]) was a supplementary plate for volume II; the other four plates relate to the text of this supplement. The five plates for the first edition were engraved for the second (published 1810-1811), and their inclusion here was no doubt a way of allowing those who owned copies of the first edition to bring them up to date in some details. Upcott gives a list of all the plates, and describes the order in which they appear in both editions. As with the other parts of Daniel Lysons' great work, Upcott notes that large paper copies of this supplement were also printed. Lowndes adds that the small paper copies were published at 2 guineas and the large paper at 3.
