Full title: Compendious view of universal history and literature : in a series of twenty tables, arranged in collateral columns of nations, and progressively divided into grand compartments of historical and literary time, from the period of the earliest records to the year 1833 : grounded on the fifth edition of the German of G.G. Bredow, late councillor of the Prussian regency in Silesia, and professor of history in the University of Breslau : to which is appended, a table of painters, arranged in schools and ages, principally from the private French notes of Sir Matthew van Brée, painter to His Royal Highness the Prince of Orange Nassau, and professor in chief of the Royal Academy of Arts at Antwerp : the whole translated, with various alterations and considerable additions, including particularly the history of Ireland, Scotland, Wales, the Saxon states in Britain, a succinct view of the transactions of the Europeans in India, and three entirely new tables, comprising the history of Europe from the year 1799, to the present time / by Major James Bell, corresponding member of the Society of the Antiquaries in Scotland.

Consists chiefly of 21 tables. All except one are printed on double leaves and are in colour.

Folded leaf at end is an explanation of the principle of the colouring.

The original appeared under title: "Grundriss einer Geschichte der merkwürdigsten Welthändel neuerer Zeit", Hamburg, 1781. It was afterwards brought down to 1796 by the author and continued to 1810 by C.G. Bredow.
