South Sea Company Power of Attorney for £300 of Stock

This South Sea Company document gives power of attorney to Robert Dingley for £300 of stock, and it has been signed by the Right Honorable Jane Martha Countess Dowager of Portland. It is an engraved form on paper that is filled in by hand and signed at the bottom. A black wax seal has been placed beside the signature of the Countess Dowager of Portland, in the bottom right corner. The decorative headpiece portrays the coat of arms of the South Sea Company, and there are three embossed six pence stamps in a row on the top left corner of the document.

Transcription:

Know all men by these presents that I the R Honbles Jane Martha Countess Dowages of Portland. Do hereby authorize and empower Robert Dingley of James Westminster Gentlemen. To sell assigne and transfer unto any person or persons whatsoever and for any consideration sum or sums of money whatsoever three hundred pounds. Stock of an in the capital or principal stock of the governor and company of merchants of Great Britain trading to the south seas and other parts of America for encouraging the fishery. And for me and my name or otherwise to make sign and give good and sufficient receipts acquaintances and discharges for such consideration moneys. And I do hereby ratify and confirm all and whatsoever the paid Robert Dingley shall lawfully do or cause to be don ein and about the premises by the virtue of these presents in Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the thirteenth day of April. Anno dni 1722 And in the eighth year of the reign of our sovereign Lord George by the Grace of God of Great Britain, France and Ireland King Defender of the faith &c.
