Abstract

This loan has been engraved on parchment, and there are two small vignettes depicting different bridges in the top left and right corners of the document. Several sections of the document have been filled in by hand, detailing the terms of the loan. There is a decorative sidepiece on the left, which has been cut in a waved pattern for security reasons. Below the main body of text, there are several faded signatures. There has been a rectangular piece cut out of the parchment in the bottom right corner. On the verso side, there is a stamp in the top right corner, and a note with details of the loan written in the top left corner.

Description

Transcription: By virtue of an act made and passed in the twenty third year of the reign of his majesty King George the third, "for making and maintaining a navigable canal from the river "thames, or ISIS, at or near Leachlade, to join and communicate with the stroudwater canal "at wallbridge, near the town of Stroud; and also a collateral cut from the said canal at "or near Siddingon, to or near the town of Cirencester in the counties of Gloucester and wilts"; We the company of proprietors of the said navigation incorporated by and under the said act in consideration of the sum of two hundred pounds of lawful British money to us in hand paid by Sir Edward Littleton of Teddesly Parish in the county of Stafford Baronets do hereby bargain, sell and transfer unto the said Sir Edward of Littleton his executors, administrators or assignes all and singular the tolls rates and duties arising by the virtue of the said act, and also the said navigation undertaking, and the premises, and all the right, title and interest of us the company of the proprietor of, in and unto the same; to hold unto the said Sir Edward Littleton his executors, administrators or assignes until the said sum of five hundred pounds together with interest for the same, after the rate of five pounds per centum per annum shall be faithfully paid off.
