Abstract

One share certificate for twenty Spanish dollars, this document is one of the earliest North American forest product shares. Printed on parchment, this document is filled in by hand in several sections, and signatures are visible near the bottom. There are two ink stamps near the bottom right corner, and a note written by hand on the verso side.

Transcription:

This indenture made this first day of April in the year of our lord on thousand seven hundred and ninety four between John Biddis of the County of Northampton in the State of Pennsylvania, Esquire, of the one part; and James Campbell of the County of Philadelphia in the state of Pennsylvania of the other part; Witnessed, that the said John Biddis, for and in consideration of the sum of Twenty parishdollars to him in hand paid, at or before the sealing and delivering hereof, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged: hath granted, bargained, sold released, and confirmed, and by these present doth grant, bargain, sell alien, release, and confirm, unto the said James Campbell his heirs and assignes, a lot of ground in the town called Milford, laid out by the said John Biddis, on the bank of the River Delaware, in Upper Smithfield Township in the County of Northampton, in the state of Pennsylvania; Also one out-Lot, containing two acres, and one share of a paper manufactory assurtenant to the same; and all other the Privileges and advantages, rights, members and assurtenances, agreeably to a plan and proposal respecting the said town, enrolled in the rolls office at Philadelphia, in letter of attorney book No. 4, page 310 &c. And the reversions and remainders thereof. To have and to hold all and singular the lot and lots, and other privileges hereby granted, bargained, and sold, or mentioned and intended so to be, with the assurtenances, unto the said James Campbell his heirs, and assigns, to his and their proper use and behoof for ever. The share in the paper manufactory, and stock of five hundred dollars advanced agreeably to the said proposals, to revert to the said John Biddis, his heirs, executors, administrators, or assigns, at the expiration of seven years only excepted. And the said John Biddis, for himself, his heirs, executors, and administrators, doth hereby covenant, promise, and grant to and with the said James Campbell his heirs, and assigns, that he the said John Biddis, and his heirs, all and singular the said premises hereby granted or mentioned, so to be, with the assurtenances, unto the said John Campbell his heirs and assigns, against him the said John Biddis, and his heirs, and against all and every other person and persons whatsoever, lawfully claiming, or to claim by, from, or under him, or any of them, shall and will Warrant and forever defend. In witness whereof, the said parties have interchangeably set their hands and seals hereunto. Dated the date and year first above written. Received the day of the date of the above written indenture, of the above named James Campbell the sum of twenty dollars being the full consideration money therein mentioned. Before me [illegible] personally came John Biddis, and acknowledged the above indenture or instrument of writing, to be his act and deed, and desired the same may be recorded as such. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty fourth day of April 1794
