Abstract

This city bond for £400 has been printed on parchment in 1776. The coat of arms of the city of Dublin has been engraved in the top left corner beside a seal that has been attached to the bond. There is a design of a city gate embossed on a white leather seal.There is a decorative sidepiece on the left edge, which has been left uncut. The main text in this bond is separated only by spaces that have been filled in by hand. At the bottom of the document, there is a signature that reads "Benjamin Taylor, Town Clerk". On the verso side, there is a written slip attached to the document with a pin in the top left corner, and a revenue stamp in the top right corner. Filling the entirety of the verso side is a record of the payments of interest written by hand, continuing to 1823.

Transcription:Know all men by these presents, that we the lord mayor, sheriffs, commons, and citizens, of the city of Dublin are held and firmly bound unto Robert Gosling of Lincoln's Inn Fields in the parish of St. Giles in the fields in the county of Middlesax and Kingdom of Great Britain Esq. in the just and full sum of Four Hundred pounds, British currency, to be paid unto the said Robert Gosling or his lawful attorney, executors, administrators, or assigns to which payment, well and truly to be made, we bind us and our successors firmly by these presents. In testimony whereof, we have caused the common seal of the said city, to be hereunto affixed, the twenty fourth day of June in the year of our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and seventy six. The condition of the above obligation is such, that if the said Lord Mayor Sheriffs, commons and citizens, and their successors, shall well and tryly pay of cause to be paid unto the said Robert Gosling his executors, administrators, or assigns, at the city of London in the Kingdom of Great Britain one annuity of ten pounds, British currency, by tow half yearly payments, on every twenty fourth day of December, and twenty Fourth day of June, in every year, during the life of Harriott Gosling (eldest daughter of him and Elizabeth his wife) aged about seven years on sixteenth July last with additional interest from time to time, arising by the benefit of survivorship, until the annuity payable to the said Robert Gosling his executors, administrators, and assigns, shall amount tot he sum of five hundred pounds, sterling; pursuant to a scheme of life annuities with benefit or survivorship, for one life, to be divided into classes of ten thousand pounds each, proposed and agreed upon by the said Lord mayor, sheriffs, commons, and citizens, for raising a sum not exceeding seventy thousand pounds then the above obligation to be void, otherwise, to remain in full force and effect in Law.
